The Protection of God’s Word

The Protection of God’s Word

Across the world, Christian women like you and me, trot through life guided by their feelings. Prone to falling prey to deceitful doctrine, they’re tossed from one wave of chaos to another wave of confusion, drifting further and further from the truth.

But why?

Two reasons come to mind. (1) They aren’t truly saved or, (2) they aren’t studying God’s Word.

False Teachers Still Exist

In a culture driven by social media, we are more likely than ever to be presented with false teaching. In fact, the majority of the “bible teachers” on display at bookstores are spreading lies.

But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of truth will be blasphemed. And in their greed they will exploit you with false words. (2 Peter 2:1-3 ESV)

Ladies, it’s vital that we know what God’s Word says. In order to know it, we must be immersed in it.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. A Christ follower who is unarmed by Christ’s Word is dangerously prone to false teaching.

More Than A Devotional

Devotionals and flipping to a Psalm on a whim have their place, but the Christian in pursuit of holiness should be going deeper than that.

Believers have an amazing gift, exclusive to us. Through the Holy Spirit, we are granted the ability to understand the Bible. Something unbelievers do not have.

The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:14 ESV)

If you are in Christ, you can understand the Word of God! But in order to do so, you have to seek it out remembering that, “all Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17).

 Equip Yourself

Do you want to be “tossed to and fro by the waves and carried about by every wind of doctrine, by human cunning, by craftiness in deceitful schemes.” (Ephesians 4:14)? Yeah, me either. That’s a scary place to be, and for some it leads to spiritual death. No, thank you!

I want to be fully equipped for the battle against Satan’s schemes!

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God… (Ephesians 6:13-17 ESV)

Many people rely solely on Preachers to tell them about God’s Word. They simply trust everything they say and never look to the Bible for answers themselves.

You must hold everything you hear from man up to scripture. Man is fallible and you cannot place your faith in the hands of another human.

Peter reminds us of the importance of “confirming our election”.

For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election, for if you practice these qualities you will never fall. (2 Peter 1:5-10 ESV)

If we aren’t seeking God in his Word, we will be blind to false teaching.

False doctrine kills souls. We must protect ourselves and others by knowing what scripture says.

Tim Challies has a great series about false doctrine to help equip you as you listen to different preachers and teachers.

May your eyes be wide open, your ears keenly listening and your heart guarded by God’s Word.

This is great! Something everyone must read! It is too easy to get swept up into the world and it’s ways and teachings if you are not fully equipped with God’s Truth on your hearts. Awesome post!

  • So glad you’re getting this message out there, Brittany! We are sadly missing proper exegesis and hermeneutics in favor of “experiencing God” in a short little passage to salve our emotions. While there is certainly nothing wrong with experiencing God and having an emotional experience, this can’t be the totality of our faith- which you’ve summed up nicely. Our dive into the Word needs to be thorough and not just a quick feel-good passage and we certainly can’t rely on our pastor’s to be our ultimate authority on the Word.

    Pinned your lovely graphics. 🙂

  • Thank you for expressing so well the importance of studying God’s Word. The words that He speaks to us, they are spirit and they are life! I always look forward to your writing, you’re a blessing!

  • Great reminder! Thank you!<3
